Joomla vs WordPress: Which CMS best fits your website?

A Content Management System (CMS) is important because users can easily manage website content without the need for thorough technical knowledge on programming languages.

In this article, we will pretty much try to decipher the features of each CMS so that you can decide what makes one better than the other.

In recent years, two CMS’s have dominated the web – Joomla, which was first released on September 2005, and WordPress, first released in May 2003. Both of these websites offer free CMS solutions making them even more attractive to website users, beginners and experts alike. Because of their feature, Joomla and WordPress are outstanding options, however, these features are also responsible for making the choice between the two, a little too difficult.

Joomla is a portal while WordPress is a blog

Joomla’s main function is actually as a community type site or portal while WordPress’s main function is an open source blog. To be able to expand this function, both CMS’s make use of plugins which can be found all over the internet.

If you are looking to create a community, a portal or a network where you can recruit members, create forums and threads, post articles where people can comment, or put up a newsroom, then Joomla is the better option for you. The Joomla development team has made the navigation system of this CMS user-friendly so that you can start using it by the time you understand the basics of how it works. Joomla does not require one to know HTML. You also have the option to set expiration for your articles, activate dates, indicate an author name, and other features that you’d learn as you go on with using Joomla.

The first version of Joomla came out in September 16, 2005. Joomla 1.5 was released in January 22, 2008 while 1.6 came out in January 10, 2011. In July 19, 2011, Joomla 1.7 took over but come January 2012, Joomla 2.5 is poised to take control. Of all these versions, Joomla 1.5 and 1.7 are the only ones being supported until now.

If you’re the kind to be satisfied with just a simple change of colours, then you’d find it really easy to deal with Joomla but if you’re looking for something more advanced template (and yes, it is definitely possible with Joomla), then you’d need to study about it further before becoming a master in this craft. To make sure you don’t get overcharged, entrust your website to a web designer who has had experience working with Joomla before. To learn more about Joomla and how it works, a good starting point is a beginner’s guide from Joomla: Getting Started with Joomla.

Wordpress, on the other hand, is probably the most user friendly blog system and publishing platform ever created especially that it doesn’t demand one to have great knowledge of HTML. WordPress can do as much as Joomla except that all code used in the former is web standard.

But being a web standard has its many advantages but the most important is that search engine would just love to have you on its top pages – especially Google. WordPress plugins are very powerful and dominant in terms of SEO. Not surprisingly, many WordPress-run websites are on the first page of Google.

Setting up a WordPress site is very easy, and once done, you’d be in the ranking Google within a couple of days. And this is Google – nothing can beat it, at least for now. So if you’re a company, a brand or simply a marketer, WordPress is a better option.

Now, on to the downside: If you’re satisfied with simple blog posting, nothing beats WordPress. However, if you need to remove or add post dates, it may need to be changed in design mode. This may need you to study WordPress scripting language and CSS. WordPress does not have a control panel like Joomla so changing structures and orders can be very complicated. If you are New to WordPress, this is a good place to start reading.

The Verdict

As mentioned before Joomla and WordPress are two CMS that are almost similar: however, its use varies in terms of purpose. Are you planning to build up a blog? Are you thinking of putting up a website that ranks in Google? Are you looking to create a website that can store huge amounts of data? Before choosing Joomla and WordPress, it’s always a good practice to read on materials, and speak to your website programmer on the advantages and disadvantages of any CMS.
